Piaggio Group Americas have announced the recall of certain models of scooter, including various Vespa models, to have a problem with their fuel pumps rectified.

According to the US Department of Transportation's 'National Highway Traffic Safety Administration' (NHTSA), the "Piaggio Group Americas Inc. (Piaggio) is recalling certain models... Due to a defective fuel pump, the affected motorcycles may stall while being operated or may fail to restart after being shut off for 15-20 minutes."

The information on the NHTSA website continues, "Piaggio will notify owners, and dealers will replace the defective fuel pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 16, 2015."

According to the recall notice, apparently the impeller in the pumps, supplied by Bitron S.p.a. may swell, decreasing pump clearance, which could cause the engine to stall or fail to restart. "the new components can be identified by a brown cap on the motor of the fuel pump, versus a black cap on the old component."

How this will affect Piaggio and Vespa scooters in the UK and Europe we don't know yet – presumably they used the same fuel pumps on all models – but if you have any concerns about your own scooter, contact you local Vespa dealer and make an appointment to see them. If there is any recall or warranty work to be done by the Vespa to the dealer there should be no cost to you.

Some of the (American market) Vespas included are 2008-2010 Vespa GTS 250, GTV 250, GTS Super 250, 2011 Vespa LX 150, LXV 150, S 150, 2010-2011 Vespa GTS 300, GTV 300, GTS Super 300, 2009-2010 and Piaggio MP3 250, BV (aka Beverly) 250 Tourer, and 2010 BV 300 Tourer.
