Vespa for children

/ G. [. V$ K' y, s' O/ KVietnamese children have two important Italian “friends”: the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome (a leading name in international paediatric research and treatment) and the Piaggio Group. Now the hospital and Piaggio have joined forces to create the “Vespa for Children” project: a new medical program set up at the National Hospital for Paediatrics in Hanoi (Vietnam’s most important children’s hospital), in response to the need to help children suffering from complex urological pathologies (genital and urinary malformations, kidney disease), who require surgery, dialysis and kidney transplants. The project goal is to improve the quality of life and life expectancy of many Vietnamese newborns and children.

The two hospitals have been working together for more than five years, developing and sharing technical and scientific expertise in a number of medical fields, such as cardiac surgery and urological surgery, organising more than 20 missions of specialists from Rome to Hanoi, and running update courses for local medical staff at the National Hospital for Paediatrics. Through their cooperation agreement, many children affected by serious heart disease have been transferred to the central unit of the Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome for surgery, and returned to their families in Vietnam in good health.

Thanks to the assistance for urological and kidney disease provided under the “Vespa for Children” program, many other children will be treated and, with their families, be able to smile again; a further ambitious target is to achieve kidney transplants from live donors within three years.7 w) M; h6 n0 k R6 e5 _- X

"Vespa stands for quality of life, in Italy and around the world, for reasons over and beyond the scooter’s style or the new fuel-efficient low-emission engines we have developed. This scooter is fun to look at, to own and to ride. As I often say, people riding a Vespa through the city have a smile on their faces," said Piaggio Group Chairman and CEO Roberto Colaninno in Hanoi on 24 April, presenting the project to the authorities and the press. “With the Vespa,” Colaninno added, “the Piaggio Group is present all over the world, with production facilities in distant countries. So, as a responsible enterprise, it is logical that we should be leaders in the quality of life in the communities where we operate.”9 F4 L& t6 O0 P- p/ L" j
