& ]# R5 I, x; m2 g9 P& O' `Its is important to check the gearbox oil level regularly and top up if necessary to keep the clutch friction plates and the clutch side main bearing lubricated correctly.

Piaggio recommend a first gearbox oil change at 3000 miles (5000 km) and then every 6000 miles (10000 km), however we would recommend changing the oil every 3000 miles (5000 km) on a standard engine and 1500 miles (2500 km) on a tuned engine. It is not a break down in the gearbox oil that is the problem but the amount of fine metal particals from the gearbox that build up in the oil. We recommend using a magnetic oil drain plug to remove the metal particals from the oil.) h+ a, G& {% T2 i- E

When the Vespa P range was launched in 1977 Piaggio's recommended gearbox oil was 2 stroke oil with a SAE 40 viscosity. This was later changed to SAE 30 engine oil. In 1995 Piaggio changed the clutch on the Vespa P range and recommended SAE 80W gear oil for use in the gearbox.

Engine and gear oils are made in a similar way using a mineral or synthetic base oil blended with additive packs to reach a minimum specification. For example API (American Petrolium Institue) specifications are widely used. Engine oils usually having 2 specifications, S for spark ignition engines (petrol) and C for compression ignition engines (diesel) followed by a letter. The higher the second letter, the later the specification. Similarly gear oils have a GL- rating although this is followed by a number and it is not the case that the higher the number the later the specification and an API GL-4 gear oil is required for the Vespa / LML gearbox.

The SAE grade is the oils viscosity at a certain temperature and the W stands for Winter (not weight) meaning its viscosity at low temperatures. At 100°C the viscosity of SAE 30 engine oil is similar to SAE 80W gear oil. |
